HuneX Fighters 98 Title Screen

HuneX Fighters ’98 is a cool bonus fighting game found in the PC-FX version of the visual novel First Kiss Story. If you’re unfamiliar with it, please check out my video about the title here.

This mini-game must first be unlocked by playing some of the visual novel. Unlocking the game takes less than an hour and requires little effort.

This page will provide a guide on accessing this game within the original PC-FX release, via emulator as well as some additional resources for HuneX Fighters ’98 Ver 2.

Access Via Save File for Emulator

If you don’t have a PC-FX or don’t want to do the work, this will be the easiest method.

I’ve created a save file using the win 64 version 1.21.3 of Mednafen‘s PC-FX emulator. You can drop into the “sav” folder to load the save file. I’m not sure if this is compatible with other emulators, versions, or if it can be converted to console.

The save file can be found here.

Once the game loads, press your equivalent to the “Run” button to get through the title screen. Select the “?” menu option to load HuneX Fighters ’98.

Accessing via Playthrough

I’d say this method takes less than an hour and requires minimal input.

If you don’t want to enjoy the plot of First Kiss Story, you can simply skip text by setting the controller’s “Mode 1” setting to “B.” It will pause once the game requires input from the player.

First, you’ll want to get to February 8th. To progress time, simply select locations on the map marked with hearts.

On the eighth day, there will be a phone call with a guy named Ayano, as seen above. Select Option 1. I’m not sure if there are any states that may lead to Ayano not calling you. If you want to play it safe, you can find a complete day-by-day guide at the bottom of this post.

Once night comes, you’ll automatically go to his house to play some HuneX Fighter ’98.

You can challenge him to five rounds before he kicks you out. If you want to keep playing him, click Option 1 to continue. You only need to play one round.

From this point on, the only thing left is to reach the end of the game. You don’t need a good ending.  Select whatever options you want. Going home seems to be the fastest way to end a day. If no cutscene is present at the house and you’re presented with a dialog option, select Option 1 to fast forward time to the end of the day. If for some reason you can’t go home, select locations with hearts by them to progress time. If time doesn’t progress, select a different location with a heart.

If you get the bad ending, the game should end after February 22nd. Your character will be forever single, but at the very least now he has HuneX Fighters ’98. If you somehow got a good ending, the day the game ends depends on who ended up with. Either way, you’ll get there eventually.

Once on the ending screen, you’ll need to reset the console (Press Run and Select at the same time.) Get past the title screen and then select the “?” option at the bottom of the menu which will launch the game.

HuneX Fighters ’98 Ver. 2 for Windows 95/98

In First Kiss Story Desktop Accessory CD Volume 3 there’s an updated version of HuneX Fighters ’98. If you wish to know the differences, please watch my video.

You can find the Desktop Accessory iso on archive.org. If you decide to purchase it, make sure you buy the correct disc. It should have a girl in a maid outfit on the cover.

Unless you have Japanese Windows 95/98 set up already available, this is going to be the hardest option. However you do get the benefit of a slightly updated version of the game. I’ve done this through a Japanese version of Windows 95, however the game lists compatibility with Windows 98. I’m unsure of the compatibility with Windows XP. My installations of Windows 7 Home and Windows 10 Pro could not launch the game.

The following are the system requirements listed in the manual:

The only method I’ve been able to fully try is using PCem. I recommend using Oligopolist’s guide for the set up. Note that this guide is for a US version of Windows, so it won’t match one to one. If you’re new to this process, I’d recommend testing a US install first before performing a JP install.

Unfortunately, I do not have a retro PC available to run the game natively. Feel free to share some footage if you do. I’d love to see it running properly.
