Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare was the last game in the series that I was impressed with. Previous to this title, Call of Duty’s campaign was about making you a member of a squad. You were doing extraordinary things, but it always felt like a team effort with the soldiers around you.
It’s been awhile since I played Call of Duty 4 so my memory is a bit hazy. From what I can recall, Modern Warfare was a turning point in the series’ campaign design. It focused on funneling you through flashy scripted events and making you, as the main character, feel empowered over others. With the need to crank up the action with each new release, it’s a natural outcome.
I do think elements of Modern Warfare still try to remind you that your character is human. No matter how awesome you are, you’ll never survive a nuclear bomb.
