I really liked the Call of Duty series leading up to Modern Warfare 2. The original was a refreshing take on World War II campaigns. The second polished the formula to a shine. The third entry was disappointing, but I played the Wii version, so It was my first experience with a Wii pointer controlled shooter.
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare brought the series to present day. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 was…. well, more Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.
The original Modern Warfare was so well made, it felt redundant just making another game in the same setting and playstyle. Sure the multiplayer exploded with Modern Warfare 2, but it never did anything for me. I pretty much stopped playing Call of Duty at this point. Modern Warfare had set the template that each future version would lean heavily on. From the outside, it took a long time to find something appealing in the series again.
Black Ops 2 had some nice gimmicks, but I think it’s only recently that the franchise has aimed to make a hook with each title. From the sounds of it, Advanced Warfare changes the pace of combat by allowing users more mobility on the battlefield. Black Ops 3 seems to be focusing on super powers and traits that each class can equip and upgrade.
I’d like to get back to the franchise, but at this point the series is just in my never-ending backlog.
