I don’t get excited for games before release anymore. Sometime after high school, the hype machine in my mind just shut down. There are games that I think look more appealing than others, but you won’t find me pumped until after I play something usually.
Disaster: Day of Crisis was one of the last games that I had built up hype for. The Japanese Dramatic Trailer really inflated my expectations. It sold the title as a fast and frantic experience with non-stop action, but it didn’t end up being that. There turned out to be a lot of exploration as you walked around and saved civilians.
Initially, I was disappointed when I imported Disaster from Europe, but I don’t think this game was the reason I stopped hyping up releases. Eventually I reigned in my expectations and started to prefer sections of gameplay over well-cut trailers.
As for Disaster, I look back on the game fondly.
It’s full of laughable voice acting and ridiculous sequences. You out drive a tsunami, fight a bear in a forest and defeat an entire army while in the middle of a hurricane. It also has a silly sense of humor. There’s a special side mission where a meteor is headed straight towards earth and you can go blow it up. You can also punch open barrels, and then giant hamburgers pop out that you eat for health.
I ended up reviewing Disaster: Day of Crisis twice: here and here.
