There’s an obsession with near flawless video games. A title is often viewed as not worth playing if it doesn’t succeed in every aspect of its design.

Drakengard 3 is kind of ugly, the gameplay is dull, the level design is repetitive and it has a lot of technical problems. However, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it.

It’s a game that thrives on its characters. The majority of the main cast always has sex and violence always on their minds. Instead of trying to make them seem mature and badass,  Drakengard 3 humanizes them. They laugh, argue and bully one another constantly. There are serious moments, but it always comes back to that playful and humorous tone.

The levels are just chocked full of dialog and eventually the game itself just blends into the background as you absorb these characters and their personalities. I ended up really connecting to these loveable characters, and that outweighs the game’s shortcomings.

If you want a more complete picture, I’ve written a full review of Drakengard 3.
