I’m always iffy about how much I should share my ongoing brain thoughts about the channel directions and where I should share them. Before Ko-fi, historically it’s been on the podcast, but I like keeping it focused on interesting and less covered game topics rather than the direction of YouTube, though if I’m short on content I’ll often dip into some thoughts on what’s next.

Either way, for the Ko-Fi posts I don’t necessarily think it’s a bad idea to more or less think of donators as investors or something so it makes sense here to provide progress updates on the hectic adventure of the 2000 things I think about all the time regarding content creation.

Anyways, if you didn’t see, in the last post I talked about hitting a wall with the main channel content creation. I kind of talked about it as if I was shelving it, and, to some extent, I have since I put any intention of working on what I had outlined aside.

But that doesn’t mean my brain isn’t still pondering it and I might have a better idea of approaching the topic. Previously I felt like the way I was thinking about videos from a point of authority almost. Like “I’ve figured out how to think about games, so let me tell you how I think you should go about them too.” Obviously, that’s not how the idea was presented on paper, but that was how I felt like it came off. I’m just another person alongside you and 5 years from now what I think is right could very well be very wrong. Nothing wrong with that, just very human.

But I did kind of think about something that was helpful in opening my mind up about games. And that’s really finding the answer to the question of “why.” I feel like asking Why is usually a healthy question (I’m sure there are many ways you could position it where it isn’t.)

But I feel like it’s a question I have to answer constantly and one of the most effective ways I’ve found I communicate my “why” answers is usually through the premiere videos. Someone might scoff at my thoughts on Babylon’s Fall or Balan Wonderworld if I just ramble them off, but I feel like I’ve found a good success rate answering that question for people in those videos, even if someone disagrees with my interpretation of the game.

So, I was debating maybe making a series of videos based around “Why” for the central theme and way I communicate to the viewer what the channel is about. So for now,l I’ve got a document sitting on my desktop with a bunch of ideas for “Why” videos. But who knows, maybe it’s another one for the trash.

I think one thing I do fear is making videos too much about me. I do really like making games the star of the show, so finding that balance is something I’d like to do. Though like with the Babylon’s Fall video, I think there’s the danger that talking about a game too long could lead to some people checking out if the video strays too far from the core topic. But I think that with the OCP+ channel, it may be more my outlet for raw game thoughts without a ton of extra fluff.

Happy to hear your thoughts if you have any! It’s hard to navigate this stuff as a solo content creator frequently, so I appreciate the feedback.

Side note regarding the YouTube uploads of OCP Podcast. They’re still going at the moment. Funnily enough, I mentioned not caring about what goes up on the OCP+ channel, then was like, “I’m removing it because I care what goes up on the OCP+ Channel.” So, for now, I put that on hold until I can find a good reason to remove it if that ever comes
