No, I didn’t accidentally upload an image from DeviantArt. This is Evolution 2, a turn based JRPG with a rough, but cute and charming, art style.
Developed by Sting and oddly enough localized by Ubisoft, this dungeon crawler RPG features randomized dungeons. That’s right, expect to run down many copy and pasted rooms and hallways. There are some custom-made dungeons by the developers, but not much thought was put into them.
Honestly, it wouldn’t be so bad if the dungeons weren’t ridiculously long. My old review from 2008 of the GameCube port recalls them taking between two to five hours to complete. Jeez. My review also states there’s only one save point in each dungeon, but I think I might have missed a temporary save system or something.
I give Evolution a hard time, but I do have a soft spot for it. It’s a relatively care-free RPG with a charming cast of characters. There’s also a wide variety of skills with entertaining animations that really showcase the personality of the cast.
But man, I’m not sure if I’ll ever forget the pain I felt with the Evolution series.
