This post was a part of the My Collection series.
I was never into Sega pre-Dreamcast, so when I think of the company’s golden years, titles like Jet Grind Radio come to mind.
It’s a deceiving game. On the surface, it looks kind of like Tony Hawk mixed with a graffiti element. But when you sit down and actually play it, it’s not the same at all. Tricks are automatically performed, so the focus is on the player traversing the environment.
Most of the levels have a vertical design to them where you have to jump, grind or climb in someway or another to reach a grafitti point. This element makes Jet Grind Radio kind of like a platformer.
The problem today is that the game’s controls are imprecise. The characters slides around quite a bit, so trying to land and stop on a specific platform can be challenging. But if you have some patience, the cel shaded style and mix of upbeat songs alone make it worth checking out.
