This post was a part of the My Collection series.
I’m not a fan of standard rhythm games. Stuff like Guitar Hero, Dance Dance Revolution and those Hatsune Miku rhythm games just never appealed to me.
However, I do love rhythm games that feature linear stories with progression. Space Channel 5 is probably one of my favorites. It’s just so ridiculous. You’re a television reporter who dances their way through space, fighting off an alien invasion and rival reporters.
Unfortunately, the first game in the series is only available on the Sega Dreamcast and PlayStation 2. The backgrounds are pre-rendered CG, so it can’t be easily updated for modern HD platforms. The second game has in-engine backgrounds, so it’s available on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC.
There’s also a Game Boy Advance version of the original game, but I’d imagine it’d lose a lot of its charm on that platform.
