Controlling first person shooters on a Nintendo 64 is a mess. Quake II on the system offers a  variety of control schemes, but none of them work well thanks to the lack of a second analog stick. The best control option is using the C-buttons for movement and the analog stick for aiming. However, it’s still a little weird. On most other platforms, you use your left hand for movement and your right hand for aiming. In this case, it’s flipped.

Initially, Quake II on Nintendo 64 looks like a straight port of the PC version, but the single and multiplayer maps are original. It’s hard to say why the single player maps were reworked, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it was due to some technical limitations of the platform. The multiplayer maps were changed due to the limit of only four players on a console.

It’s not a very good game, but it is an interesting curiosity.
