I didn’t think too deeply about games before I started writing. I was young and didn’t feel the need to understand why I liked or disliked them. Once the credits rolled, it was time to move on.
I played through almost the entire Resident Evil series while in this mindset. I could rank each entry if you asked me to, but why I value each game is blurry in my head.
From what I can remember, Resident Evil 2 is probably my favorite. The addition of some action sequences was refreshing from the slow and foreboding gameplay of the original. I also really like Leon S. Kennedy, as goofy as he looks in his debut. But I can’t tell you much about the game beyond that.
There are a few other franchises that I run into similar problems with, like Castlevania, Zelda and Final Fantasy. What’s different in their case is that I’ve played a large number of games in their series after I started writing. With an understanding of the series’ fundamentals, it’s easier for me to relate those characteristics to a game I have vague memories of.
For Resident Evil, I’ve only really thought deeply about RE6, a game that is almost entirely different from the original concept.
