It’s not uncommon for a game to features seasons, or at least areas themed upon them. However, every single day in Shenmue is associated with an actual date.
Shenmue starts on Nov. 29, 1986. Most of the game takes place during the winter months, and I just happened to be playing during the same season in real life. While wandering the snow covered streets of Dobuita, it was also pretty cold in my room.
Being able to feel the chilly air in real life while the game was trying to portray that atmosphere created an illusion of having a greater connection to that world. Ever since that experience, it’s something I’m always thinking about when I’m playing games with winter themes or sections in the cold frigid months.
Shenmue technically continues until April 15, 1987. You’ll likely finish the game well before that. Part of me wants to back and see if they try to portray spring, or just act as if it is a long winter.
