Sonic Adventure 2 made me realize that I love cheesy Sega music. The original Sonic Adventure has some so-bad-it’s-good music, like Sonic’s Theme “It Doesn’t Matter” and Tail’s “Believe in Myself.” However, Sonic Adventure 2 takes it to a whole new level.
“Escape from the City” performed by Ted Poley and “A Ghost’s Pumpkin Soup” performed by Hunnid-P became internet sensations years later. While each future Sonic game would often have a few vocal themes, Sonic Adventure 2 has at least ten tracks with lyrics. Some of them are remixes from Sonic Adventure, but the number is still staggering.
If you look at Sega’s history, this music shouldn’t be surprising. They had been making a lot of it since their Sega CD add-on allowed for streaming music. Sonic CD’s introduction had different opening vocal themes for both the Japanese and North American releases, with each about the same quality you’d hear from Sonic Adventure 2’s tracks.
I miss Sega’s vocal songs. Since they moved away from making big budget retail games, they’ve also stopped using vocals in their new music. I could never figure out if anyone creating the songs ever took it seriously, but I love them either way.
