My memory of Star Ocean: Till the End of Time is vague. It’s been a good seven years since I played it. At the time, what stood out to me was just how hard the second half of the game was. I refused to learn the mechanics and just tried to slog through to the end. Back then, I’d do this from time to time with JRPGs and it would really sour my experience. I guess I was just impatient.

In hopes of making this article more than just, “I can’t remember much about this game,” I loaded up my old save file to see if I could refresh my memory and  I just got murdered in the first encounter. Instead, I ended up fiddling around with the menus a bit.

I noticed that the character portraits looked surprisingly clean running over component cables. Out of curiosity, I pulled up the status menu to see if there were larger portraits and, oh man, for some reason they use different images for the status menus. They look surprisingly rough compared to the small character portraits. It reminds me of art from low budget doujin/indie games. The girls in particular just have massive eyes. I think it has to do with the coloring and simplicity of the character art, too.

If you actually want to know more about the game, I have a really old and incredibly bad review. You can check that out here, but you’re probably better off looking elsewhere.
