Most people with an NES collection have at least one or two copies of this laying around. I used to have two myself, but I recently gave one copy away.
Oddly enough, it wasn’t until the late 90s that I’d spend much time with Super Mario Bros. or Duck Hunt. I played on my uncle’s NES before then, but most of my memories involve Contra and Skate or Die 2.
These two games bundled together are a great introduction to the system. Duck Hunt acts as a traditional arcade experience with short burst play sessions and simple point-and-shoot controls. Super Mario Bros, as simple as it may seem, shows off the complexity that the system allows. It was an epic adventure across eight worlds where players grew with each until they mastered how Mario moved.
If, somehow, you’ve never played an NES game, this package feels almost essential to seeing the two sides of what the system offered early in its life.
