I say it almost every time I talk about indie games, but, if you somehow haven’t heard yet, I’m not a big fan of them. Just the very nature of how they’re built goes against a lot of my own personal gaming tastes. Undertale, Cave Story, Limbo… All great games that I cared little about. However, for some reason, I really enjoyed The Stanley Parable.
Many indie games are one note experiences, including their humor. What makes The Stanley Parable different is that it has a variety of branching paths. The tone and humor changes depending on which path you take. This gives each one their own distinct feeling while still remaining true to the foundation of the game. They’re all short, so they never over stay their welcome.
My favorite is a path where you continually make bad choices until they force you to make a good one. Even though you made the right choice, the game is so “broken” that the narrator following you can’t fix it. He tries to reset the scenario over and over again, but it never works out.
