In its time and place, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater is a great series. Not only is it a fun score attack game, but it also has a lot of objectives that make you replay each level in different ways. These locales are packed with detail, events and Easter eggs, so it’s enticing to just keep exploring them.
But in my mind, what makes Tony Hawk’s Underground special is its plot and cutscenes. It’s a tale of betrayal and redemption that rivals even the finest storytelling.
That’s a lie.
The story is great since it’s all just dumb fun. Your best friend betrays you for fame and money. While he’s out partying, you have to work your way up through the ranks with the power of skating to become a true pro. Not just in name, but in your heart.
It’s way over the top and feels self-aware with all its “dude, yeah brah” kind of dialog. At least I hope no one took these cutscenes seriously.
I can’t tell you how the game itself stacks up against the rest of the Tony Hawk series, but it’s a fun novelty having an actual story to string the levels together.
