Games like Castlevania: Symphony of the Night are hard to write about. So much has been said in the past 18 years that I can’t really add anything new. I’d much rather spill my guts over Castlevania 64, which is underappreciated.
Symphony of the Night was my first Castlevania game and, honestly, it took awhile for me to get into it. As a child, I got lost in the expansive map and had trouble managing even the first boss fight as Alucard. It was my mom’s fiance’s copy, so I never felt bad for brushing it off.
When my mom broke up with her fiance, somehow the game snuck its way into my collection. Many years later my uncle introduced me to Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow, and I ended up really enjoying it. Then I remembered I still had a copy of Symphony of the Night. I finally went back and played it thoroughly.
There are still many Castelvania games for me to play, but I’ve played most of the main entries in the series. Symphony of the Night is a great starting point, but, for myself, it’s one of the least exciting game.
